About

About James Smith Cree Nation

James Smith Cree Nation is a Treaty 6 Cree Nation in Saskatchewan whose lands lie on both sides of the Saskatchewan River, east of Prince Albert.

nihtâwikihcikanihk (ᓂᐦᑖᐏᑭᐦᒋᑲᓂᕽ) (At the place of good growth) — James Smith Cree Nation, known in Cree as nihtâwikihcikanihk (ᓂᐦᑖᐏᑭᐦᒋᑲᓂᕽ), "at the place of good growth," is a Treaty 6 Nation in Saskatchewan. The reserve was once known as Fort-a-la-Corne. The Nation is named for Chief James Smith (1843–1902), who came from Manitoba's Red River district and signed Treaty Six at Fort Carlton in 1876. At that time the band had 134 members in 32 families. In 1902 the federal government forced the Chakastaypasin, James Smith and Peter Chapman bands to merge, and today they are working toward becoming separate nations again.

The Nation's lands lie on both sides of the Saskatchewan River. The farmland to the south has supported land leases, farming and ranching, and the forest to the north is used for hunting, fishing, trapping and gathering. The Nation has two reserves:

  • James Smith 100
  • Cumberland 100A

Culture is at the centre of community life. Each year the Nation holds the Fort a la Corne Traditional Powwow and a four-day Cultural Gathering with ceremonies, healing practices, sweat lodge and pipe ceremonies, community meals and traditional art workshops. Community services include a daycare, Sakwatamo Lodge, a health clinic and the Bernard Constant Community School. Construction of a new wellness and treatment centre began in January 2026.

In December 2025 the Nation reached a $713.8 million settlement with Canada over long-standing Treaty 6 land grievances. James Smith Cree Nation is a member of the Prince Albert Grand Council and is led by Chief Kirby Constant and council.
